Vietnamese Street artists with Dominique Mourey, DRIP'IN's founder

Artworks exhibited along the wall of the French Residence at Saigon – April 2021

The Street Art Jam in Saigon is now over. Congratulations to the artists, the Consulates General of France and Switzerland, the French Institute of Vietnam and the Goethe Institute. Thanks as well to all the sponsors for their necessary contribution to this unique and founding event.

It’s a successful and inspiring event.

It was a great success for this first Jam placed under the sign of solidarity commitment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Making the works on supports installed in the garden of the French residence, the public as well as the artists relished being in the shade of the hundred-year-old trees of the largest private garden in Saigon. Not easy indeed to express oneself by 35 degrees under a burning sun!

This artistic session, organised by the French residence, was a great success.

This art session, organised over the weekend, fulfilled its promises. With a diverse audience and interactions with the many children present, a total of nearly 1500 people came to see the artists paint and interact with them. Many nationalities were represented, as well as a majority of Vietnamese, showing their interest and curiosity for this popular art. The artists had fun in a joint live performance with the guests.

First Jam in Vietnam
A Jam is in fact an event that brings together a large number of street artists around a defined program. It is an opportunity for them to create several pieces at the same time, in a given place.

With the democratization of street art, many Jam events regularly take place in Europe or the United States. This was, however, the first time a Jam was held in Vietnam.

The local television stations have been very active in this field.
Local television stations and internet channels flocked to report on this new event. Interviewing the artists and organisers, they contributed to the increased visibility of the Jam.

Local TV and internet channels came out in droves to cover this new event.

A jam in solidarity with UN commitments
We were keen to participate in the global solidarity commitment for the common good. Indeed, France as well as Vietnam are among the 193 signatory countries of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), intended to improve the living conditions of millions of people in the world by 2030.

We were delighted to be able to participate in this event.

For this premiere, it was clear to all of us that these goals were a link between the people and cultures of the world and that it was a great opportunity to share this solidarity with the public. We drew lots for the objectives that we assigned to the artists, respecting the equality of all.

The best 6 artists were selected by the jury.

The 6 best artists of the emerging scene in Vietnam thus created, simultaneously, murals on the following SDGs:

CRESK: Sustainable Cities and Communities

KLEUR: Quality education

DAES: Peace, justice and effective institutions

ZKHOA: Gender equality

VUIQA: Measures to combat climate change

KINGI: Zero Hunger

The 2 guests of honour street artists DAOS 501 and SUBY ONE who had beautifully participated in the House of Paint in November 2020, addressed the following two SDGs:

DAOS 501: Aquatic Life

SUBY ONE: Good health and well-being

A year of touring exhibition in Vietnam
The murals are on display for two months on the walls of the French Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City.

The exhibition will then depart on a tour throughout Vietnam, ending in Sapa, in the very north of the country near the Chinese border, for the 2022 Lunar New Year. It will be presented in the main cities of the country, Nha Trang, Hue, Danang, Hanoi, etc…

This exhibition will bring together a large number of visitors and raise awareness of these important and essential commitments in today’s world.

A promising first step for the rest of the calendar

Given the great success of this Jam, we are now preparing the international street art session where facades of buildings in the centre of Saigon will be painted by international and local artists.
This first also in Vietnam promises to be exciting.
Discussions have been going on for several months with the municipal and district authorities to consider which buildings and facades to paint. At the same time, we are working to identify artists who could come from abroad to work on this event. Finally, there is the logistical organisation to be put in place so that everything will be functional and efficient on the date.

There are still a few things to do.

So there is still work to be done, but we are filled with pride to be part of the emergence of street art in Vietnam with artists from all over the world.

Follow us for the rest of this great year dedicated to this art that we are so passionate about.

Graffiti origins

Graffiti have been part of urban culture since ancient times. While some consider cave paintings or cave art as the first graffiti in history, it seems more appropriate to consider the many examples dating from Ancient Greece or the Roman Empire as historical evidence of graffiti.
